Exploring the Ideas, People, and Innovations Shaping Africa's Future.

When Lagos Life launched in October 2026, its developer says it passed 1 million players in four days. The secret was not fancy graphics. It was Lagos itself: the rent, the hustle, the danfos and the nightlife, turned into a shared online world.

That got us thinking. If Lagos can be a game, which other African cities deserve one? Here are six, with the everyday reality a game would capture and two places every player would want to visit.

This is an opinion piece and a bit of imagination. We are not aware of any of these games being in development. Stuff.Africa is not affiliated with Lagos Life or its developer.

1. Accra, Ghana

The everyday reality: Accra moves on trotros, the shared minibuses where the mate shouts destinations and everyone squeezes in. A game could run on that rhythm: catch the right trotro, get to work on time, and haggle your way through the day. Add weekend beach plans, Friday wear and endless debates about whose jollof is better.

Signature locations:

  • Makola Market: a maze of traders, fabrics and bargains. The perfect place for a side hustle mini-game.
  • Labadi Beach: where players go to relax, meet friends and spend their hard-earned cedis.

2. Nairobi, Kenya

The everyday reality: Nairobi runs on matatus, the brightly painted minibuses with loud music and their own culture. Life there mixes tech-hub energy, mobile money and the daily grind of traffic. A Nairobi life game could reward players for building a startup, juggling side gigs and paying everything by phone.

Signature locations:

  • Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC): the iconic tower on the skyline, ideal as a city landmark or a business hub.
  • Nairobi National Park: where you can see wildlife with skyscrapers in the background. A unique city setting few games could copy.

3. Johannesburg, South Africa

The everyday reality: Joburg is a city of ambition, built on gold and still driven by the hunt for opportunity. Minibus taxis with their hand signals, braai weekends, amapiano nights and long commutes between very different neighbourhoods. A Joburg game would be all about climbing the ladder.

Signature locations:

  • Vilakazi Street, Soweto: famous for its history and its lively street life.
  • Maboneng: a creative district of galleries, markets and rooftop spots, perfect for players chasing culture and connections.

4. Kinshasa, DR Congo

The everyday reality: Kinshasa is huge, loud and musical. Rumba and ndombolo pour out of bars, and the city’s style culture is legendary. A Kinshasa game could revolve around music careers, fashion and the daily challenge of crossing a massive city.

Signature locations:

  • Boulevard du 30 Juin: the city’s main artery, full of traffic, business and energy.
  • Matonge: a neighbourhood known for its nightlife and music scene, where players could build a reputation as the best-dressed or best-sounding in town.

5. Cairo, Egypt

The everyday reality: Cairo barely sleeps. Microbuses weave through traffic, cafés stay busy late into the night, and ancient history sits beside modern apartment blocks. A Cairo game would balance work, family visits and late-night outings with friends.

Signature locations:

  • Khan el-Khalili: the historic bazaar, perfect for trading, shopping and getting lost.
  • The Nile Corniche: the riverside walkway where players could stroll, meet people and watch the city lights.

6. Dakar, Senegal

The everyday reality: Dakar mixes ocean views, colourful car rapides and a strong culture of music, wrestling and teranga (hospitality). A Dakar life game could include surfing, wrestling matches and running a small business in a fast-changing city.

Signature locations:

  • The African Renaissance Monument: a giant landmark overlooking the city and the Atlantic.
  • Gorée Island: a short ferry ride away, with deep history and a calmer pace. A meaningful place for players to visit and learn.

Why these games could work

Every city on this list has the same ingredients that made Lagos Life spread: strong local identity, shared daily struggles, distinctive transport, and a nightlife and music scene people are proud of. Players love seeing their own lives reflected back, and they share what they recognise.

We explore that idea further in Why Lagos Itself Is the Product: What Lagos Life Says About African Culture Online.
